The Strong’s Women in Games initiative documents and celebrates the crucial contributions of women to the electronic games industry, past and present. Launched in 2017 as a key program of the museum’s International Center for Electronic Games®, the initiative builds on The Strong’s already extensive holdings of artifacts and archival records—prototypes, games, design documents, marketing materials, correspondence, presentations, photographs, oral histories, and other items—that illustrate the impact of women working in the video game industry. Prominent among these are the Carol Shaw Collection, Ken and Roberta Williams Sierra-Online Collection, Her Interactive, Inc. Collection, and Atari Coin-Op Divisions Collection.
The Strong is caretaker of the world’s most comprehensive collection of materials related to video games and other forms of play. The museum’s collections already include objects and archival materials that illuminate hundreds of years of women’s board game design, including the two best-selling games of the 19th century (Authors and Dr. Busby) and innovative 20th-century titles like The Landlord’s Game—the predecessor to Monopoly—and Candy Land. These materials provide a foundation for The Strong’s unparalleled electronic games holdings that document women’s many contributions to the field, including iconic games such as Centipede, River Raid, and Journey.
Women in Games Events
The Strong museum's "Women in Games: Inspire" program, held in November 2018, was an unprecedented evening of dialog with female innovators and trailblazers in the video game industry. Speakers included Dona Bailey, Megan Gaiser, Amy Hennig, Susan Jaekel, Brenda Laurel, Jen MacLean, Sheri Graner Ray, Bonnie Ross, Anastasia Staten, and Victoria Van Voorhis.

Women in Games Exhibits
The Strong tells the important story of women in the development of both video games and computing in an interactive, artifact-rich exhibit titled, Women in Games.
