The Strong® Announces
20 for 20 Book Challenge
In honor of the 20th anniversary of The Strong’s Gelser Library, the museum is challenging guests to check out and read 20,000 books during the year as part of the 20 for 20 Book Challenge.
“For many children, reading is an important part of play,” says Beth Lathrop, director of libraries at The Strong. “Pages in a book can spark a child’s imagination and create a new world for them to explore. We are excited to host this challenge to encourage people of all ages to check out books from the museum and journey through a new story.”
Guests can pick up a bookmark tally sheet at The Strong’s Grada Hopeman Gelser Library desk and use it to record the title of books checked-out from the museum. After checking out 20 books and returning them, they can submit the completed sheet at the Gelser Library desk and be entered in a quarterly drawing for a $20 gift card to the museum’s shop. The 20 for 20 Book Challenge will continue through December 31, 2019.
The Strong is one of only a handful of museums in the nation to offer guests a circulating library. This program is made possible in part through a special partnership with the Rochester Public Library and the larger Monroe County Library System. Children’s books, at all reading levels, can be found throughout the museum in book nooks housed among the exhibits. Books may be returned at the museum or at any public library branch in the system. The Gelser Library desk is open during regular museum hours.
Museum Hours: Monday–Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. The Strong opens at noon on January 1.
General Admission Fees (does not include admission to Dancing Wings Butterfly Garden®): age 2 and older $16, under age 2 free, members free. Fees subject to change.
Admission to Dancing Wings Butterfly Garden: General Admission fee plus $4 for members, $5 for nonmembers, under age 2 free. Fees subject to change.
Parking: Free parking is available at the museum for all guests on a first-come, first-served basis during regular museum hours. Please note that, on high visitation days, the museum lot may reach capacity early in the day. The Strong is not responsible for fees incurred at off-site locations.
