The Strong to Launch America at Play Mobile Tour
During New York State Path
through History Weekend on June 17 and 18

ROCHESTER, New York—The Strong announces the launch of its newest mobile tour America at Play in concert with New York State Path through History Weekend on June 17 and 18. The self-guided tour explores the museum’s America at Play exhibit, which opened at The Strong in December 2016, and is available in French, German, Spanish, Mandarin, and English. (An enhanced audio version is available in English and Mandarin.)

The mobile tour offers a walk through more than 200 years of American history. Guests can learn about timeless toys, such as playing cards, jump ropes, and alphabet blocks; explore play during different eras, including the Great Depression, World War II, and the cultural revolution of the 1960s and 70s; and take a glimpse at the shape that play may take in the future. Highlighted artifacts include the first pinball machine (Ballyhoo), the New Game of the American Revolution, an original doll of child star Shirley Temple, a toy Elvis Presley guitar, and Super Soaker 50 water blaster.

“The toys and games that people have played with reveal fascinating and unexpected stories in American history,” says Christopher Bensch, vice president for collections at The Strong and one of the guides on the mobile tour. “And the launch of this new tour pairs perfectly with New York State Path through History Weekend to promote our shared history and cultural heritage. The Strong is proud to be among hundreds of attractions across New York State participating.”

The Strong Museum Guide mobile app is available at the Apple Store and Google Play. In addition to the America at Play tour, the app features an events guide; an easy-to-follow floor plan; and another self-guided tour—“12 Must See Artifacts”—available in English, French, German, Mandarin, and Spanish. The mobile app is supported by a grant awarded to The Strong by Empire State Development’s I LOVE NEW YORK program under Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Regional Economic Development Council initiative.
